You need your favourite sequencer/tracker/etc you use to compose your music, and of course it's nice to have that tracker (eg. ModPlug Tracker) to be able to read the original module notes unless you can do it by hearing (which is very much possible as well).

Maybe you should consult some forum related to music and composing? They can help you better than the readers of this forum.
But to name few sequencers;
Orion (which I use), www.synapse-audio.com
Reason, www.propellerheads.se
Logic (only for Mac nowdays), www.emagic.de
Cubase, www.steinberg.net
FruityLoops (personally I don't like this at all www.fruityloops.com
For trackers you can look for example,
www.madtracker.org
www.buzzmachines.com
www.modplug.com
Orion comes with nice package of samples and instruments if you buy the Platinum edition. Reason has lots of instruments as well. ...or you can go and buy some hardware - synthesizer(s).
www.prepal.com
If you think you can become musician overnight.. forget it. I've been composing for 10 years now and I still learn a lot everyday.

I don't know, I think it would be easy to make a pretty good sequel, and without a lot of complexity..
You could have a little Earthling cruiser stationed at the bottom of the screen, and laterally have it move back and forth and fire a single missile straight up.
You could have several parallel columns of alien ships moving from side to side and slowly descending on you. The ones at the top could be dreadnoughts, then podships, then eluders, then intruders, then drones.
As you destroyed more and more of them, they'd start to descend faster and faster! If they finally got to the bottom and you hadn't destroyed them all, you'd lose!
That would be an awesome game.

We are the Ur-Quan Kohr-Ah. Our nature, the fulfillment of our fate requires your destruction. You are filth. It is now your time to be cleansed.

that idea seems a little done before, and since its not a full game, it wouldnt really be a sequel would it.

Guess the classic atari game time:
You're an Orz marine that has boarded a Mycon Podship, and this Ur-Quan is charging you. You have to shoot it, but when you do the podship instantly metabolizes the segment you shot and turns it into a mushroom.
You're the Zoq-Fot-Pik defending your planet from the Kohr-Ah bombardment. Shoot missiles at the blades to keep your cities safe!
You're the Zoq-Fot-Pik defending your planet from the Kohr-Ah bombardment. Swing your shields back and forth to deflect the blades and keep your cities safe! (<- obscure)
You're an employee of the crimson corporation, sent to gather important papers that have been strewn about the vast office, in under twenty minutes. Jump around obstructive secretaries and security guards; swing over grates on the floor which lead to the furnace. Avoid other running couriers! Since your mission is important, your boss will bail you out twice, but if you annoy too many people higher than you, or fail to complete your mission, it's furnace time for you! Ah, but its physically impossible to grab all these documents in twenty minutes. Well, do as well as you can.
