SC3
« on: May 12, 2003, 05:41:59 am »

I know you all pretty much hate SC3, but I was doing some reading on the sites about it.  Is it confirmed that the makers of SC2 had nothing at all, no input, not even stolen plans as far as contributions to SC3?  Because honestly, I feel like (without having played the game) they did a pretty admirable job of keeping the same "voice."

There is the ironic humor of Precursors being big dumb beasts of burden, there is the creepy hidden conspiracy overarching it all, the unknown powers who for unknown reasons threaten all of the universe. And the genetic harvesting of people for the Arilou actually seems really really plausible, exactly the creepy sort of thing that might fit with why they would be "interested" in us.

I get the feeling the execution of the game was awful, as far as gameplay, and maybe the dialogue muxed it all up, but as far as these general threads of plot go, it does sound somewhat "star-controll-ish."  Just my (very newbie) 2 cents.

I agree.  SC3 is lacking in 3 areas in my humble opinion, however...

1. Cleverness of the puzzles in the game is missing
2. Ending sucks
3. Too much tedious management tasks, also too much resource available.

Perhaps people would see the SC3 plot more favorably if there was some actual gameplay involved.

indeed -- the game's plot was not so poor it was intrinsically unforgivable, but the lack of a GAME to go around it exacerbated the problem. As it is, it's a boring movie with a bunch of sitting around and an occasional fight which is pathetically easy if you paid attention for about ten seconds at the beginning of your sitting-around period.

SC3 suffered from one thing. No love.

I mean that FF & PR3 make SC2 (and one, and every game they've ever made) with major love. I know it sounds cheesy, but they really weren't out to make a buck. They were out to make a game. Yes, money made that possible, and if Fred is on the board to correct me I'll eat my words, but money was not what it was about. They worked for 6 months FREE to finish the game. 6 MONTHS! They could have slapped something in a box, shortened the game, whatever, and been free, but they didn't. Yes, we lost Groombrige. Yes, they had to cut a few corners. But all in all they were dedicated to making their vision come true.

I don't believe SC3 had a vision besides money. Consequently it didn't make any, and futher consequently it stunted what could have been the single most successful sci-fi series and made alot more money. Now, however, they won't release the name on the premise of "If we can't do it, no one will do it."

LET US PROVE THEM WRONG! TFB WILL MUST PRODUCE A SEQUEL AND WE MUST ALL BUY IT! IF IT'S $60 A POP, WE GRIT OUR TEETH,  SELL OUR CAR, AND WE MUST WALK TO THE STORE TO BUY 3 EACH! WE MUST GIVE IT AS A GIFT TO FRIENDS FOR THEIR BIRTHDAYS, CHIRSTMAS, AND WHATEVER ELSE! UQM WILL RISE AGAIN! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

[insane fan mode off]

Anyways, I think that'd be cool.

To be honest... I am crazy (?) enough to pay 50 Euro in advance to get a SC3 (a sequel to SC2) anytime (preferably soon *g*)... I am just that crazy, yes... 9-)

I'd definitely pay in advance also--just another question then, I was reading I thought on the main page of the Pages of Now and Forever that people were writing a generally accepted script about SC3 (something about time travel, although maybe that was a joke)--is there some cooperative fiction effort going on?

And along that note, is there some place where I could find a timeline that *included* SC3, or a spoiler somewhere with more details on its plot?  Thanks, I appreciate any help!

Are you talking about Timewarp, SuperFunRom?  It's plot/story is psuedo collaberative:  we spew our ideas, no matter how inane, then Team Beige, the story team (Timewarp teams are arranged by color), sifts through the chaff to get the good stuff.
The name Timewarp is also psuedo temporary; it was thought to reflect the original plot somehow, but now is accepted to be a reference to ourselves going back in time before SC3 was released by Accolade and making a better sequel to SC2.  The current plot (I think) has nothing to do with time travel.

That was it, thanks.  You all are amazing, your dedication to this game I mean--I am continually surprised.
