some questions about the game (what else :) )
« on: May 18, 2003, 03:21:24 am »

is mouse supported?

how to make money fast? Should I seek the hottest stars, or will some missions  will give me much money?

What is the point of stunning passive life forms ?

Can I assume that gas giants by themselves are never landable?

No, mouse isn't supported.

Well, I think 90% of the fun is finding out what works and what doesn't. if you still what to know though, its your choise.

My aim is not to get a cheat code to have a load of starting money. I understand very well that the fun is coming from exploration.

I'm asking of generalities, let me remake my sentences:

Should I spend tons of hours ingame to harvest all minerals from nearby solar systems (perhaps even in an exhaustive way), or should I seek only the richest ones? Real life speaking I wont be able to redo the game, so I would like to finish it in the first try. It seems that the game halt in 2160, so I cant afford to head in the wrong way.

To answer your questions:

Money? Hot stars are good if you don't feel like cheating and knowing just where to go. You can get comfortably rich off of mining if you take six game-months, plan well, and are quick-fingered with the landers. After that, well, just pick up stuff if you happen to be near a nice-looking star for some other reason.

Missions? Well, there aren't really 'missions' per se, just situations which require your attention.

As for the life forms, well, Hayes put it well -
"While I respect your search for abstract knowledge
frankly, Captain, in our present circumstances I see little use for such data here.
Perhaps you can make use of biological information elsewhere."

Assume his supposition is correct. (note: stunning the critters lets you pick them up and take them as samples aboard the starship)

General strategy for me:  Try to hit the "hot stars" near destinations in which you have business.  This should save you some time-- you don't get too far out of the way.

Possible Spoiler:  Sell the Burvix Caster to its original owner.  If you are smart, you can get 30K+ RU for it.

ok thx, it will do. I already got 8 K from alpha centauri (exotic) and I felt rich Smiley

some other questions:

can the music be toned down without suppressing it. I like it, but the volume is far too loud.

I have problem with save&reload. I feel like cheating to do so. I dont do that often but sometimes it happen. Do you save&reload yourselves?

If you run the game from the command-line, you can use an option to set the music volume as a percentage of the maximum.

Save/load? It depends on my mood. When I'm feeling serious, no; when I'm just hacking around, yeah.
