Some people here seem to think that "they" are going to re-make star control 3 and completly ignore the one that was made...
I did play SC3 and although the gameplay needed serious improvement, puzzles were way too easy, and dialogue not nearly as enjoyable as SC2... The plot was still pretty good, IMO anyways.
So what is the deal? Are they actually going to make another game in this great series? Will it be after star control 3 or will they just ignore star control 3 and make a new sequel to star control 2?

Ignoring the game is by far the right way to go.

the game was pure crap! (sc3) it lacked everything that sc2 was, is, and always will be. i would rather see a well done sequal, with sc3 as the *unofficial* title, then see trying to fix what trash sc3 was, by making sc4. imo ~DEFIANT
but hey if you like crap, please by all means, take all that you want.

No matter how bad you thought SC3 was, the only question that matters is "how was the plot?"
The plot/storyline is the only thing that will matter if they decide to make a SC4 game.

In the end, the next sequel will probably not be StarControl 3. SC3 is owned by accolade. It will probably be called Ur-Quan Masters 2 or some such and it will defonately ignore the Accolade owned K'tang, Ploxis, Green Mycon and all others.

I found the K'Tang kind of amusing, but not very. The blubber-mouthed bully is familiar from the Thraddash and Ilwrath. Nearly half the new species were composed entirely of complete idiots (K'Tang, Doog, DakTakLakPak, Vyro-Ingo). The Harika/Yorn dynamic made NO SENSE. etc.
Good sides: "We be mighty XChagger!" (too bad their ship was almost impossible to hit with since it has only a non-homing non-spread weapon and turns about as fast as a Chenjesu) "That's a very good question. How DID we get here?" VUX were never so adorably evil.
Umm, I liked the Owa, Harika/Yorn, and Clairconctlar ships. The Lk would have been fine if, well, they had been a little quicker to move and turn (higher acceleration not needed). Also, its shot could have used a wider oscillation.
But should the game be left in the UQM universe? NO.

Not so: It reused much of the dialog from SC2, and therefore did have something of what SC2 was. Unfortunately, those portions were not original, and everything else ignored SC2 so the plot wasn't consistant, but at least did a good job with the grey, faded graphics, the bad MIDI music, the psuedo-3D melee, and the puppets. Oh wait, no they didn't; those were parts I disliked.

How exactly did Accolade get the rights to make Star Control 3 then? They must have bought them otherwise that must be illegal.
What I liked about SC3:
The precursor explanation (rainbow world function etc...) K'Tang, similar to thradash yes, but still very funny. Starmap was a decent attempt at 3d, but not great either, SC2 map system was much easier.
Dislikes:
New ships mostly were terrible. Dialogue boring on average. Puzzles very easy. New races were all idiots and incredibly easy to gain them all on your side. No challenges, hardly any battles at all to fight. No polish, music, etc...
So what exactly should the plot of UQM 2 (SC3 V2) be then?
Perhaps without the Sa Matra the Ur-Quan don't just fold over like a bunch of babies, but instead the Kzer-Za and Kohr-Ah join forces and re-assemble some battle thralls to regain control of the galaxy. Will the Kohr-Ah still wish to cleanse the galaxy or will they re-concile their differences with the Kzer-Za ? Without the Sa Matra I doubt they could afford to cleanse all the races, they need allies.

They bought some of the rights, enough to put out the game.

Not that I'm totally following this conversation, but to answer this question... It's my understanding that its a fairly standard thing for developers to give up all rights to the game they develop to the publisher in their contract in exchange for the publisher to actually pay the developers to be able to make the game in the first place (everyone has to eat and feed families also). Because they now own the rights and trademarks, publishers can make sequels without the original developers permission or knowledge, etc.
From what little public info is know about what happened with the rights, it's my understanding that Accolade/Infogrames/Atari stopped paying TFB royalities and what not... so thus the contract was broken and now TFB owns the original content now and thus are able to bring you UQM via fans working out all the kinks.
Basically it was like "You pay us for Star Control 1 and 2 and you can sell SC1, SC2 and make Star Control 3 and 4, 5, 6, etc." Now, since they aren't paying them anymore, SC1 and SC2 are TFB's again.
Thats my spin of it.
