so? im guessing some of you have your roots in sci fi, and not just good games. im writing this to let thoes of you express what things inspired your intrest in sci fi.
does any one here remember an old sci fi program calle "space 1999"? it was about a base on the moon and some how the moon gets knocked out of earths orbit and goes off into the cosmos. this is one of my ealiest memories of my intrest, before i discovered star trek *kirk* reruns. other influances have been old 50's, 60's sci fi like "the day the earth stood still", "the blob", "body snatchers", ect...
there were also modern day sci fi series babylon 5", and star trek=tng=ds9=voyager=enterprise, war of the worlds, star gate, earth final conflict, andromeda, ect...
some movies that had a heavy influece are, star wars, independence day, "enemy mine"****i highly recommend this movie***, terminator series, battle beyond the stars, time bandits, war of the worlds, the thing, event horizon wich sucked imo, sphere, mars attacks funny, space balls funnyx2, imposter, ai, ect...
cant think of more...
some games, besides are beloved sc2, are wing commander, home world, freespace, ect..
so whats your influence? what got you into sci fi?

My mother was a bit startrek fan, so it was her influence that got me. But my personal favorate sci-fi is the Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy Trilogy. All 5 books.

Some of my earliest memories are watching the Immunity Syndrome and The Cage (classic trek episodes) on a little black and white TV we had in our kitchen.
Around the same time, I was beginning to read, and I read the Space Cat books (there is another series by the same name), the Choose-your-own-adventure Space Patrol, Galaxy Spy #1 (the one with the moebius strip passenger liner with like five passengers, I don't remember the title), Tom Swift Jr.....*
Later on, I read much fantasy and some science fiction, watched ST:tNG regularly, then intermittently watched DS9 and Voyager... began reading Larry Niven a lot. Then watched all of Babylon 5 in one year. I recently resumed reading science fiction regularly again -- The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Hyperion, Empire Star/Babel-9, etc.
* wow, I've never put five dots in a row and have it be grammatically correct before

There are at least 4 books in Hyperion (Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion, Fall of Endymion, I believe they're called), but I highly advise against reading past the first book. I think Hyperion is one of the best books written, while the sequels are just good pulp. The effect of reading them is to diminish the quality of the first, both by dilluting it and by tying up loose ends that were much better left unresolved.

Actually, I only read Hyperion -- I was going to go out and get Fall of Hyperion, since Hyperion... well, it's like reading Sluggy Freelance up to http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=020123 and then stopping. (if you have never read Sluggy, that strip is a very poor place to start -- try http://www.sluggy.com/daily.php?date=970825 instead)
How could I forget HHGttG?

yes, is it the path of "exploitation now and forever" or the "sluggy doctrine"? A war brews, about to engulf the entire RPGWorld.
Our heroes, Bob and George, are going out to achieve something positive in real life. Residents of Megatokyo, they will have to go out and challenge the Knights of the Dinner Table to Player Versus Player combat -- in freefall!
Then they will have to hack into the central computer of the Clan of the Cats, and tell it to calculate 1/0, which will cause a General Protection Fault. Once the computer is busy comparing dissimilar things like, say, a Triangle and Robert, they will be able to free Alice, the one mediator who can bring together the rival leaders, Ms. Penny Ar'cade and, well, you know. If they cannot be reconciled, then it's Nukees for everyone and the most advanced lifeforms will be the goats wandering through the achewood.

I got the complete HHGttG as a Christmas present last time and I was disappointed. The quality of the books was really uneaven. The original and Life, the Universe and Everything were hilarious (all the good quotes come from the first book). So Long and Thanks for all the Fish was pleasent but amusing points were few and far between. The Restaurant at the End of the Universe and Mostly Harmless just sucked.
Mostly Harmless didn't make any sense from the opening pages where we are told that Arthur's girlfriend vanished somehow to the end where a pelican computer manages to have all the Earths in all the parallel universes destroyed somehow.

it all started at Star-control for me.....(im 14...) i cant remember which one, but i guess it was 1... i played Sc2 with my brother a lot, killing him much with my 1337 Pkunk flying skills, got killed alot because he used Orz and Synth a lot..... bah! Destroyed his whole fleet with my 1337 Chmmr/MmrnMhrm skills... and.... got killed alot in return...
Sc2 is still my all-time favorite of all games i know..... but too bad i forgot about the best game ever...... until about 5 years ago... when my brother came home with a cd.... Star control 2....... it only costed him 5 guilders (about 2 euros...)..
then, i got back into the Starcontrol series.. still played it alot, completed the adventure about 3 times in 1.5 years, nearly killed the " 12345 " and " nm,./ " keys because i played melee so often.......
so it really started with Sc2 for me, if Sc2 didnt exist, my whole life would have been different, like that i woudnt like SF as i like it now.....
burp! too bored now to type on...
damn! did you see the amount of dots i used? DAMN!!! im infected with the tripleormore dot virus!!

The sad things is that I recognize most references in there... And those I don't recognize, I'm afraid to check out, lest I'm addicted to more comics...
Yay, someone else likes Pern! Though it may be silly at times, I still enjoy it. On an off-topic fantasy tangent, I just restarted the Dragonlance books....
A thing for romance and fantasy? That doesn't fit well with out homicidal Primat.....
