Unholy Wars
« on: June 01, 2003, 07:40:13 am »

A previous topic prompted me to play Unholy Wars again.
Fred Ford once said in an interview that UW was where some of the ship ideas that they were kicking around for SC2 ended up.
First off, if you haven't played this game, you should. I bought it 2 years before I even had a playstation because I wanted to support FF & PR3. (I planed on using Bleem, but eventually, my brother donated me his PS1 when he bought a PS2.)
UW is kinda half way between SC1 and Archanon (sp?). It even had the spots on the board that if you sit on give your team more power.
However, it lacked humor. The characters were all serious. Even in SC1 the spathi and Umgah were just funny looking. A woman flying around a giant ribbed ship, kinda tounge in cheek funny.
I wonder if UW could be resurected. If ever TFB made a UW2 , and if it were a bit lighter, would anyone here support it? I know I would.

I always think so too, but I knew that it was beyond their control.  Well, TFB was planning on having humor in it as well as the story, but unfortunately the marketing didn't understand the game and the humor, and didn't like it from the beginning, just because it didn't fall into a nice, safe marketing category. When the marketing agreed to add the story for a reason (a new similar game was a big hit), they had no time to do it any longer in order to meet the deadline. I think it was a misfortune that TFB had no capable marketing person at that time, but I enjoyed the game itself.

I hope so, but I believe the publisher still owns the copyright.

I love Unholy War!  If another was made, I'd buy it.  Even though it wasn't too "light", I still enjoyed the concept of the universe and races.  Too bad they don't own the copyright to the ideas  :-/

Yeah, but doesn't TFB still have a positive working relationship with Crystal Dynamics who do have the copyright? UW2, I think, is a posibility if TFB can convince marketing that a sequel to a barely recongnized game might sell. It's a long shot, but it could be done.

I'd like to see a third race, the Hunters, finally catch up to our rag tag Teknos fleet. But as their fight in UW1 was on such a AUR rich planet the Teknos and Arcanes are actually a force to be reconed with. Eventually the battle could lead off world, perhaps with the Magnus's prediction that the world of UW1 would be destroyed coming true. Maybe get to see the homeworld of the Jaeger's (with the Jaegers in a desprate struggle to protect the boy they worship and love). Also, the Quicksilver/Angel child would make an appearance, if not a central roll in the story.

Sorry about all the UW spoilers, but it's not like their secrets to be discovered. Mostly storylines to be read before the stragety games take place.

Man, I shouln't think so much and get myself all excited over an idea that probably will never see the light of day.
