Help Installing!
« on: June 07, 2003, 12:28:47 am »

Well, first I downloaded the v2.2 installer, but when I run it, it says that it can't dload the contents, nor the voices, nor the 3DO music.
Hence, I downloaded manually the .zip files for the content, voices and music. The question is... What next? I've searched the forum and the sites and didn't find anything helpful. Plus, the zip file doesn't include a help file, or a readme file... Just A LOT of .png
Where should I unzip them???
Thanks

Run the installer .exe, then when in 'Download options' screen, select 'Use local package directory' and give it the location of your .zips. That way the installer uses your manually downloaded files and hopefully works fine.

Ok, I did that...
When choosing components, I select "Install data files", "Install voice files" and "Install 3DO music"
In the next step, I select "Use local package directory", but at the same time I have to choose either to "Skip these components" which is no good, or "Download and Install from internet". Now, in theory, this option should only download that which I don't have in my computer. However, the installer still tries to download the files and fails. It doesn't even try to check the .zip files I have in the folder...

WHY???

I have no exact idea why the installer doesn't work (it's known to be buggy and hopefully gets better for 0.3).

You can still manually make directory named 'content' under the dir you installed UQM ('C:\Program Files\The Ur-Quan Masters' by default IIRC) and then unpack all the content zips there. If it still doesn't work, then you probably have to wait for 0.3..

Yeah, I could do that (unpacking the zip), but... the content.zip has 11,500 files in it, and they have to be distributed in the subfolders for each race and there's lots of files which are just numbers, so no clue as to where to unpack them.
I think the only solution is to (somehow) get the installer to work for me, so if anyone knows...
Thanks anyway Mika

Assuming you use any sane unzip program, it should work just fine as it unpacks everything recursively to proper subdirs automatically.

Ps: Is there a way to delete a topic from the forum which has been resolved, so it won't take up space?

If they were inclined to do so they could look at the FAQ. Hey, why don't we have a technical issues FAQ? If no one else is inclined, I can compile one this afternoon...

er... how is tomorrow afternoon?

Just one simple question:

Were is uqm-0.1_to_0.22-20030521-content.zip file???
(I can se only installers on striker's site)

And when I let installer do the downlaods I still get 0.2 version (I assume since the newest files are still from Feb) and a lot of time wasted with 33.6 modem.

Grrr!!!

Tried again with Installer and it again just gave me regular 0.1-0.2 update (and more time wasted), instead of 25-may 0.22

I finnaly found contents by closely monitoring installer.

It's in:
http://www.4u-servers.co.uk/~striker/install_files/

If only there were direct link to these files all would be easier.
(no such thing at main  http://www.4u-servers.co.uk/~striker/ page).

Finnaly SUCCESS!

I upgraded to 0.22 (21-May)

And I'm very satisfied with addition end game credits from PC version (last words of various aliens). Finnaly something rewarding after you finish the game.
