There probobly already was a thread like this one and if you can point me in the direction that would be nice.Anyway, what do you think is the best way to make your freinds play SC, guide them one step at a time or just tell them to download UQM and throw them in to the deep water. Your invited to share anything from a little trick to an elaborate ruse, you've come up with.

No, actually, I can't remember anyone ever starting a thread like this one before. Luk? Anyone?
Me, I try to get them into it through related games. I recently had a friend who's a big online gamer who's played team fortress, and got them talking about it. Everyone loves TFC. Then, told him, "It's all about personality, really. That's what TFC has. It's like StarControl. Oh, you've never played starcontrol? Here, check this out." Then I give them a link to sc2.sourceforge.net and they're off.

I wait for a version with an intro in it that doesn't crash, then give them the link to the download.

I've been handing out CD's with Timewarp on them for a while. With all my friends being married (some with kids), it's hard to get them to actually play the CDs though. I wouldn't want to ruin their marriages by introducing them to an addiction like StarControl 2 (or UQM).

simple
invite em over one day to play melee
both players using one keyboard, and if ya play like I used to play it's a full contact sport , only rule is all hits must land above the belt, cos hittin a man on his balls just anit right to win an SC2 match

Well, from my experience you can't get them to put they're time in to the actual quest, since it doesn't have polygons ("What do you mean it isn't 3D at all?! I mean even Baldur's Gate looked a bit 3D and anyone who played THAT game is a geizer!"). So we need to do it with melee ("What do you mean only two ships?! Even Doom had a multi-player feature and that game is OLD!"). From what I've seen, its better to let them play with the easy cyborg ("Cyborg?! The last game that word was like... um... I don't know, but cyborgs are so nineties! And besides, using my L337 H4xOr skills, I will beat the snot out of your ‘X-wing plus flys’ with my ‘Star-treky Quadruple engine galaxy class starship’ with it’s missles of DEATH!"), then against an experienced humen, since no matter how good you are, you can’t imitate “crapy” like the easy cybrog can (This game has even worse AI then Diablo! Look how it’s puny blue banana flys straight in to my well placed flaming farts of DEATH! Burn you SuXoR pyrodactal! BURN!!!). it can also get them used to the inertia and aiming untill they’re ready to take you on ("You?! I don't need you or your 'Older then Half-life 2' game!" "Man... that hasn't even been released yet." "I know that! but it's prequel was like a million years ago!"). Your thoughts? ("Wait! Wait! I'm just about to finish this purple fire breathing dragon with m...WHAT THE HELL?!?!? What's a blue ball doing in the middle of space?! Wait a minute... WTF! WTF! WTF! It took half of my life! ...So what if it's 2:30 AM and I'm screaming like a mad man? fine! I'm leaving! but I'm taking this CD with me so you won't have to play this sucky game anymore! Good Bye!")

Oh man... I forgot to put "Or mybe it's best just to keep it to ourselfs" in the end. I need to think more before I click on post.
And to the "games today aren't as good as they use to" guy: I think that It just the case of growing up. Plots that were once magical and new, are now tired and old. Try and play those old games now, you'll probobly see that they're not all they were cracked up to be. That's what I felt when I downloaded One Must Fall for example, in my memory it had much better resolution and so much more detail. Or when I first played UQM, mind you I hadn't played SC since I was 10 or somthing, all the races seemed so much less... alive then I remembed them. I grew up, I guess.
there are a few good games today though. Planescape is a bit long winded but has a great plot. As well as Homeworld. I've also heard really good thing about "The longest jorney". If you look had enough, your bound to find something you like.

I have to agree with Eran. There are some cool games out there (I like Arcanum quite a bit). Our feeling of nostalgia probably do make certain things appear better than they are. (I don't think SC2 was the case, though... I just wish someone could wipe out a part of my memory so I can redisover the secrets and plots all over again).

That's not exactly what I mean. What I meant was that since you were younger then is was better for you. Hm... that's not to clear either. You always see how children are so excited about everything, Well, I think what you remember is that feeling. Games aren't worse today, we just look at them differently. Oh wait... I just said what you said, in other words. Wops...

Sorry for putting words in your mouth...
I know what you are saying... I've watched some of of the old anime I used to have and find myself thinking "How could I ever have liked this crap?"
Anyhow, I hope I don't turn into one of those guys driving around in "classic cars" from 30 years ago at some "Hot August Night" events in Reno, NV listening to the Beac Boys...
Must live in the present...

I've spent a lot of this past school year going back and playing computer games that I or my friends played when we were younger. They really seem to be more fun than most of today's games. It seems that time is spent on amazing graphics instead of an amazing game. As far as introducing SC to friends, I've been telling everyone about UQM since I found it. Several people remember playing and want are interested in downloading it. I'm having a hard time convincing other people to try it because of finals though. Perhaps I should try the melee approach. I never played with it back in the day (when my uncle "gave" me the game, he couldn't figure out how to get into melee), so I'd probably be just as bad as my friends.
