Version 0.25?
« on: June 22, 2003, 03:33:57 pm »

I know version .3 is supposed to contain the new resource system, ending/intro/compacted contect/etc. but...
It seems that most the bugs posted here or bugzilla are bugs that have been fixed already and people just don't bother to read the forums or the changelog to find out.  How about a intermediate version (.25?)  that why the new input system could get more of a workout.

Just a thought.

You could always pick up unofficial beta version (I think that v0.22 21-May is last one)

I know that, but people don't read.  Most people don't search the forum or anything.  Unless they put the unoffical build on the main page (pretty much making it official) most people arn't oging to know its there.  It looks like it might be a while for .3, so instead of scaring people off after 10 min of playing when the game gets stuck at the first --more-- prompt, let people test more of the game.  *shrug*

Releasing is a major pain in the arse, especially when you consider the number of "officially supported" platforms floating around out there (Windows, Linux, MacOS X, BSD, BeOS, etc.?).  Since (I believe) no single developer has access to all of the "supported platforms", a higher degree of communication/coordination is required than under their normal development conditions.  This means that time spent, erm, "testing" the game and/or squashing bugs must be spent on packaging everything up, smoke-testing, QA, and other such unpleasantries.  The less often they subject themselves to that manner of masochism, the better.

What new resource system? For as far as I know, this game is going to be an original port, with the same set of resources available in the old PC/3do game.

Elaborate a bit please?

The original resources will still be used, only the way they're handled internally is being redone. The purpose is to make it easier to do translations, other subtitles, custom music, and other modifications to the game (by other people, not the official branch). For instance, we'll be using XML for the alien dialogs (and some other game data).

For more information, browse a bit on these boards. It's come up on several occasions.

As for how it's coming along, well, it's not going really fast, but progress is steady. The new i/o system, which can handle reading from .zip files (among
other things) is almost ready to be integrated in the cvs tree.
I'll be starting on the XML part after that.
