the game runs in EGA on win98
is it cause i have an old version?

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but I can guess:
  • If you're running Star Control, it should autodetect your video card. If not, consult the manual for instructions on how to force VGA mode.
  • Star Control 2 does not support EGA, as far as I know. However, unless your graphics card is fully compatible on the register level with VGA, the palette will be messed up with the default settings. Add "/g:bios" to the command line to force BIOS palette support to correct this. Back when SC2 was written, BIOS palette routines were too slow for smooth fading, and most VGA cards were properly compatible, so there was little need to do things the slower and more compatible way by default.
  • If you're running UQM (Windows version) and it shows up in 16 or 256 colours, make sure that your desktop is set to at least 16-bit colour (65536 colours).

I hope at least one of these answers is relevant.
