Bug? Can't contact Ilwrath with caster

Slight spoilers.    Grin

Okay, am I being a doof?. I can't figure out how to use the casters (I have both the Umgah and the super-powerful Burixese caster) to fool the Ilwrath. In hyperspace, the casters make their "whirrr!" noise, sumoning a melnorme. At least that works!  In regular space, though, I get a big "Phbbt!" of nothing. I can't figure out how to get them to NOT summon a melnorme and talk to the Ilwrath instead.

Can someone please help? Knowing what I'm doing wrong - or that it's a bug - would be great. Many thanks..
