What ever happened to SC2 3D?
« on: March 02, 2006, 06:34:49 am »

Hi all..
this is my first post.. and I'm playig SC2 again for the first time Smiley

What happened to a 3d port of SC2?    I've looked around the web and have found

http://starcontrol.classicgaming.gamespy.com/sc3d/

which hasnt been update since 2003?

I'm reallllllly keen on seeing if we could update SC2 to 3D  while maintaining all aspects that make SC2 the best!

Could someone help me in directing me to an existing project? or if you would like to start this project from scrap?

I would need 3d artists and also coders interested in such a project..

Anyhow.. thanks for any help!

i think that site you have there is just 3D renderings of Star Control related content not a SC2 remake in 3D.

Bioslayer also has his Ur-Quan Remasters project that will use 3D models, and some fans at the Vega Strike project were making a mod set in the SC universe. At one point, there was going to be a SC 3D console game called starchon, I think. It never made it very far.

Hi.. thx for the replies...

I've checked out Timewarp as well as Aftermath..  Aftermath looks really nice..
I was a little dissapointed that with both examples that in battle mode there is no zoom functionality
It seems a little claustrophobic..   I think the zooming provided in the 3DO ver of SC2 was fantasic and worked really well....

Anyhow I'll keep looking into this some more..

Thanks!

Hey Jamie, your 3D work on the Hell Hound (http://jamietelford.com/weblog/?page_id=10, http://jamietelford.com/weblog/wp-images/hh/new_HH_high.mov) is quite good. I liked it.

And congratulations on the end of your suffering Wink
btw, where did you study? and what, exactly?

If you want dynamic zoom. My remake has it. Just follow the links below. The next step for the remake is to go 3D.

Aftermath has auto zoom, after you have locked on to an enemy. Same way as in Starfleet Command 3, when you are in overhead mode.

censored Thanks man..   the hellhound was a fun thing to do..  all about suspense and horror..  I studied at QUT (australia) got a Bachelor of Fine Art in Communication Design and Animation..  happy for it all to be over... Smiley

bioslayer  Interesting remake man.. look reasonably solid.. how long you been working on it?  ( i had a few crashes )  You say your next step if 3D?  if so.. i'm interested...  would be nice that you could implement a shader 2.0 or 3.0 engine ..  and take advantage of the new shader techniques out there..

deus siddis  ahhh.. cheers mate..  I'll have to give that a go now..  Aftermath is way super sexy..

Thanks, I worked for 4-5 months on the physics engine and 2 months on the game.

If you had a few crashes I would like to know more then that you had them. Could you elaborate?

To be honest:
It would appear that I don’t know as much about 3D graphics as you do, but I’m learning.
I would love to implement all the spiffyness that is out there, and I’m willing to learn how to do all that stuff, but I have yet to find anything other then the NEHE tutorials for OpenGL in helping me to program it. If you know any good resources I would like to know about them.

humm...
yup
normal maps wouldbe interesting

I havent messed yet with normal maps, at job we needda keep mid or low poly. Or simply uber hi for render.

Could be a way to give it a try.

I guess the jump to 3d he mentions means real time 3d, really. So, if it's real time, then its low/mid models. Though with only two ships at a time, you can go really poly rich with today's lowest cards...a gf4mx can yet move a load of polies...It yet would be killed some performance by collisions , ia, particles. Provided no othe rbottle necks. But I guess something like 7 or 8,000 polies could be even possible. I don't mind, I do all range from 300 tris till millions Wink

I was gonna try your version, but I don't have net installed...Seems I'll have to install it for one reason or another, anyway (too many cool softwares poping everywhere for free)

Oh, I hadn't read that , sorry Bio.

So, you answered that already. Well, I do know , or had before some told to be good links bout normal maps, dunno if I yet have here somewhere....

may I do a dig now.

me, definitely, I think you use Maya. I haven't do much of hi res movie rendering, though yes a bit, but not with Maya.

I have been using for a while things like Max, Blender, Wings3d, Metasequoia and a long etc.

BTW, I am more specialized in human and othe organic characters, but in the end hgave done any kind of thing.
