Hi, I am new.
I would like to ask if you really like star control battles? or do you like star control primarily for the RPG/story elements?

I'd say both. It's one of those rare games that successfully combines a lot of different elements. That's why so many years later, it still has enough appeal to have a following.

The RPG/story section is fine, but it got tiring long ago, so I primarily play the melee section.

The RPG is what makes it special, however you can really only play it 2 or 3 times without getting bored out of your mind. Once you've made the amazing discoveries theres nothing left to discover.
The melee is still a blast, even after 14 years people havent mastered all 25 ships. Net play has added a new dimension although it requires a proper lobby to really atttract the masses. This could be huge and could generate massive publicity for SC sequel.

Star Control Lives!

For me, it was the RPG/story and melees as equally. The story is nice and detailed for someone who is playing the game for the first time, and the melees in between the stories, puts you into the captain's seat, which is a nice mix. And after you finish the game, you can just play against any combination of ships, which brings some interesting results.

It was definitely the story mode that hooked me in. While my friends and I had great fun going round-robin on Melee back on the old 486, it was making all the discoveries, laughing at the crazy dialogue, and theorizing on the murkier aspects of the game universe's past, present, and future that kept me coming back (and still does, 15 years later).

I believe I read an archived interview with PR3 and he offered advice to anyone programming their own game, to write a great melee/battle and then to build a story behind it.
That's just how they designed SC2. They built a great story around a great SC1 melee engine. It worked splendidly and is a great game even today under the UQM banner.
Also, where would I go to find out more about how the alien dialog is handled in UQM? Specificly, I'm curious about what variables are kept on each race and how alien dialog is decided upon when you visit them? Any help would be appreciated.

Meep, in the UQM directory? If so my UQM doesn't have these folders. Do I need to DL the source files?

Thanx Novus. This gives me a good idea of what functions and arguments are needed. I think I'll take Meep's advice and see how these functions are coded.
