Get it here: www.bay12games.com/dwarves and the wiki: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page

So anyone here play the pure awesomeness that is dwarf fortress?

For anyone who doesnt know about it dwarf fortress is one of the best games out there, the aim is simple taking 7 dwarves you have to build a fortress which will stand the test of time. Of course nothing is easy and there are plenty of obstacles:

All your dwarves need a regular supply of alchohol or else their efficiency decreases. But injured dwarves would much rather die than drink anything other than water.

Kobolds regularly attempt to steal items of value.

Goblins send child snatchers to make of with your children, later they send ambush parties and eventually full armies.

Insane elves refuse to accept any unethical trade items, thier definition of unethical includes anything made from a dead animal anyhting with even a spot of blood on it and anyhting made of wood. Despite this almost everything they offer you is made of wood, wood which as soon as you touch it becomes unethical.

Hidden Fun Stuff! Or HFS which is quite common and marks the certain end of any fort which isnt prepared.

Chasms and magma tubes full of monsters who want nothing more than to kill you.

Neurotic and mentally unstable dwarfs who will happily watch a friend die provided they have a legendary dinning hall to eat from but will thro a fit if they suffer art defacement.

Unhelpful dwarven justice which works along the theory of if he had nothing to do with the crime hes the one to punish, your sherrif will happilly beat one dwarf to death, triggering a couple of his friends to tantrum which of course means they get beaten so of course their friend tantrum, i think you see where this is going.

Nobles who refuse to work and will happily mandate impossible items.

And of course the dwarves two greatest fears: The Cat and the Carp!!!

Plus way too much more to mention, i definetly reccomend checking out the forums for some great storys half of which hardly seem like they happened in a game at all.

OK, I tried out this game. The idea of the randomly generated worlds seemed pretty cool. However, I quit after I couldn't figure out how to give any of my units orders or jobs. I read the readme, but no help there. Perhaps a tutorial is in order; of course, this is just an alpha build. How unfortunate for me.

The graphics were more symbols than graphics, really, but this doesn't necessarily mean the game is bad of course.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head for me.

The game is massively confusing at first, suppose I really should have posted a link to the wiki. It has some guides on it although the game still has a really steep learning curve so it does take some perserverance after a while however some of the things that were confusing at first become like second nature. Anyhow I'll post the link now.

Dwarf Fortress was linked all over the place on Something Awful's games section. Some people really like this game, I guess. I tried it once and that was it. It's not so much that I can't figure out a game composed of alphabet soup, it's that I don't want to.

Dwarf fortress is one of the best games I've ever played. And it's only getting better.
Pretty much the most complete game out there.

The most complete?

Surely Robot finds kitten is more complete than dwarf fortress.
