Not agfressive enough?
« on: July 19, 2009, 09:33:08 pm »

Does anyone else find that the computer AI isn't aggressive enough in Super Melee? What I mean is, often times I'll get myself into positions where the computer simple will not attack me.

For example, the other day I got into a VUX vs VUX fight. I won, but had some of those limplets on me. So I had a super-slow, damaged VUX ship (only 1 crew left). The computer brought in a Scout. I figured it would be over fast. However, the AI refused to attack. I actually stopped the ship, got up and walked away from the keyboard for ten minutes. When I came back, my ship was still the way I'd left it.

I've found similar cases where I'll have a relatively slow ship in orbit around the planet and a smaller, faster ship will refuse to attack. I'll just leave my ship in orbit and stop touch the keys and the enemy flies around at long range.

It doesn't happen often, but once every few games I'll have to use a gravity whip to chase down a faster ship that refuses to get within range of its guns or mine.

It sounds like the AI you're fighting is stuck on its "entice" script. The cyborg has a behavior set that involves baiting the other player into chasing it. Faster-than-average ships use it fairly often. The AI is more often too aggressive, chasing after Spathi and such. The cyborg follows a "one size fits all" pattern, making very few distinctions between different enemy ships. I tend to think of "one size fits all" as the root of all the cyborg's faults. Elvish Pillager knows more about the cyborg than I do, but getting a useful response out of him is like pulling teeth from a shark these days.

Alternate response: There are still people who play against the cyborg these days?

Yeah, I do most of the time. It's obviously gone way past the point of trying to win, but usually I like to play as purposeful mismatches and see if I can win.

I'm on a painfully slow dial-up connection these days, so yes, it's either cyborg or talking a friend into coming over to play 17 year old video games.

Sometimes, I don't really want a challenge, but I want to dominate an entire fleet with a small wing of Dreadnoughts. This is of course nearly impossible in PvP.

Playing games isn't all about challenge, it's also about fun, and part of that fun is blowing stuff up. Smiley
