Combat speed
« on: December 01, 2002, 11:05:00 pm »

I posted this message before but it got deleted for whatever reason.

Is it just me or is the combat speed alittle too fast? I think the combat isn't the same as the old PC or 3D0 version. Anyone else think so too?

The combat speed (SuperMelee and ship-ship in game) seems about right to me.  I'm win9x k62 350 atiRage128.

What seems slow to me is Planetary Harvesting, particularly on planets with lots of quakes and wildlife.  My framerate seems alright  (10-20), it just looks like everything is running slower than I remember.

I too posted a message related to speed before the forums got taken out by the Ur-Quan.  I'm running this on a laptop with a 1.7 ghz processor and a ATI Radeon Mobility with 64 MB of Video RAM under Windows 2000.  The combat speed seems way faster then what I remember.  Currently winning a battle is pretty much blind luck.  I've had to re-do battles several times to win a battle which I shouldn't have had any touble with.  I haven't tested this under Linux yet, so I don't know if this is related to Windows 2000 only.  But right now, it seems that the combat speed is not checking itself against a timer but just running as fast as it can with whatever processing power it has available.

Combat speed is also much too fast for me.  I am running on an Athlon 1500+ and it is impossible to control any but the slowest ships.   Auto-fight seems to be the only option left.

My elite spathi ship is now a run by a bunch of greenhorns cause of the speed, heh. When I fire my B.U.T.T. missles most of the time they hit ME. Which is the last thing the Spathi would have happen..

Specs: WinXP, 2 GHz, 512 ram.

As far as I know, that's not a combat speed issue, but an issue about hit detection in this alpha version. It's mentioned in one of the txt files that come with the download as a problem that will be fixed in the future.

I've tried this on two different systems, a 550 Mhz and a 1.3 Ghz, and the speed in the battles and harvesting is definately faster (and probably too fast) on the newer system.  Even the first mission to Mercury is a pain because the hotspots move so fast, and battles are a bit of a gamble.  There at least has to be some standardization going.

For the record, the 550 system is under Win2k, the 1.3 is under WinXP.

Ok, I just noticed another battle speed bug.  While fighting some Umgah, the battle speed was mostly normal, but would randomly speed up for short bursts, I think whenever they were moving towards me.  So I would be halfway across the screen, and I would all of a sudden be right next to them.  This burst of speed would only last like a half-second, but occured periodically.  Otherwise, things were normal.

The Umgah are easy to beat with your flagship once you do three things...

1. Practice, Practice, Practice.  Tongue

2. Upgrade your weapons (tracking systems help if you're new at this)

3. Add more jet packs and control jets (you don't need control jets to beat them, but they do help).

In short wait until later in the game to head up to their space.

I played the game first on a 486, then on a celeron, and now on a P4 @ 2.3ghz.  Everything speed-wise feels exactly the same, be it harvesting/melee.  Everything runs full speed.  Only thing now is that the goddamn Sa-Matra is unbeatable.
