A while ago on PNF, there was a gif posted of ships that FF & PR3 came up with for SC2 that were never used. Can anyone provide me with the link for these. There was also a gif for the conversation at groombrige. Can anyone find that?

The one ship I have a question about is the Gold beatle things. Is that giant gold man supposed to be a giant gold man shaped spaceship, or is that a closeup of the pilot, or what? (Personally, I think a giant gold alien mothership would have been way cool.) Does anyone know what FF & PR3 were actually planning for any of these? (Or if FF or PR3 wanted to reply to this question, I'd love to hear from them.)

We did. You did. Yes we can. No.

Maybe that was the original Sa-Matra design.. the Giant Humanoid Statue of DEATH.

The big ships in the upper left and lower right were designs for the Hierarchy and Alliance starbases respectively in Star Control 1. We actually had them playable in the strategy game whenever you attacked an opponent's starbase. The Alliance base had a swiveling turret which could either fire or reinforce sections of its shield. They were immobile like the Samatra and turned out to be not terribly fun to play so we excised them.
The littler ships were just random designs (many by Greg Johnson of Starflight fame). I don't think we ever gave any of these much thought as to what their capabilities would be.

OMFG, Fred Ford actually responded to my post. I think I'm going to die now. Just one, focused question, Fred, if you'd care to come back and make me insanely happy. What's the giant gold guy in http://home.att.ne.jp/wave/rainbow/Toys_for_Bob/test_newship4.htm for? Was that to be a ship, the giant gold guy? Was that another starbase that would defend itself if attacked? Was the ships simply an early design for the Zot Fot Pik (I see a gold ZFP there) that was simple abandoned?

The gold guy (as were all the ships on that page) was drawn by Leonard Robel whom we assisted in getting started in the game business. Sorry to disappoint but the gold guy was just an elaborate doodle while the other ships are indeed Zoq-Fot-Pik ancestors.

Aw, man. I thought that'd be a way cool configuration for a starbase, like you were saying in a previous area that you could go up against, ya know, except it'd spawn enemy ships every so often.
I also had this idea of incorporating it into an animation I've storyboarded out to give to the starcontrol community, and have that big gold ship show up at the end to make it feel like a promo for a starcontrol sequel, and I'd get you all creaming in your shorts, then, when you all go "Wow! Are you working on a sequel/fan project, I'd say "No, I need a programmer," or "No, only if TFB hired me," or something, and when they did I'd eventually climb my way to the top of TFB, name myself High Master Ultimate Bob, use my new leverage to take over the world.
Sigh.

In the midst of posting mindless player-against-cyborg melee threads (exhibit A, exhibit B) something so much better slipped under my radar. Does anyone have a link to the unused ship images these guys were talking about?

I suppose I should link the images for everyone to see.

I wonder - on the last pic in the bottom right pic - the ZPF predecessor destroyed the ship by flying through it or just shot it to pieces ?
