Hello,
I've noticed that going from planet to planet is incredibly tedious, as the ship moves/turns very, very slowly. It makes flying from planet to planet to do the "lander thing" tedious as well..
Which brings me to the lander..
You drop down, avoid stuff that threatens to blow you up, take the minerals and leave..
and you do it a billion times over! ....it takes *so* long to fly between planets that the process becomes incredibly tedious.
Do you need to do this less as the game goes on? Do any upgrades from the shipyard help you move better in planet<->planet travel? (I'm not talking about combat)
I know this game has a great storyline..but I'm not sure I can take the planet<->planet lander trips that take *ages*...
Tell me there's a light at the end of the tunnel!

Thrusters increase your ship's speed. Attitude Jets let you turn faster. This works for both in battle and outside, when flying in Hyperspace or inside a solar system in Truespace. Just stock full on both of those and you'll be set.

Well, when you get a ship with good enough weapons, you can earn a decent living just blowing up other ships. Each Slylandro probe, for example, gives about 500 RU; they may be hard to kill now, but with enough upgrades you'll be able to destroy them without losing a single crew member.

I must say it is cool to see brand new players to this game. People who haven't ever played it before, or those who wanted to but couldn't. I just hope that early adopters of it won't be put off by the existing bugs.

Yeah, as someone said, you need to upgrade your thrusters before all else. But also, once you've mined for a couple of months, go on a mission (spathi or shofixti are good for first ones). On your way there, back, and in their home solor systems, fill up your storage bays. It will make things go a lot faster. Also, talk to the old Shofixti as early as possible, because he will tell you the location of a rainbow world, which you can sell the location of to the Melnorme. After which, you will have some credits to buy upgrades for your lander (i think with your 500 credits you can get to the upgrade which protects you from aliens).

Although right now, the vague nature of the quests is killing me. Where's the Sylandro mothership? Who knows! Where's the Ilwrath homeworld? Got me! Errrg.
Since the gameplay doesn't adopt any previous paradigms, an FAQ about exactly _how_ one should be playing it would be very appreciated. I've looked at other online strategy guides, but they all take more or less the form of walkthroughs, and I'm not looking for specifics. Just, like, should I be cruising through all of Ilwrath space looking for their homeworld, with a million enemies constantly on my tail through hyperspace? Or is it pereferable to pace the quests, rather than rush headlong into them? That sort of thing.

Well if I might make a suggestion you look at a map (the one that comes with SCII if you buy it) from The Pages of Now and Forever (check the FAQ section). When I first played I was having problems finding the Ilwrath home world too and then I looked at it and realized their spear of influence has not only grown, but it's in different places. So, I checked the star clusters where it used to be and sure enough that was where their home world was located.

Talk to aliens a lot, and write stuff down. When you have bought all the tech from melnorme, buy information. They outline the plot quite well.

And if THAT doesn't work, there used to be walkthroughs all over the net. Check the Pages of Now and Forever, or google for 'em.

Ah walkthroughs take all the fun out of the game. It's much more interesting to learn, for youself, that the Yehat help you at the end and that is the reason you keep losing (if you've playied the game already you know what i'm talking about). And to go exploring, only to find yourself deep in Ur-Quan space.
