Got voice but no music on MAC OS X
« on: May 22, 2004, 08:57:52 pm »

OK I have downloaded files uqm-0.3-3domusic.zip and placed it in same directory as voice file but am getting no music voice works fine.

Would prefare original SC2  music to start with, but any would do. Cant initiate command line from my mac to use addons feature though I have followed instructions to place files in correct uqmremix directory.

Can anyone help me get the music working.  The OS X read me is not clear on this and the manual does not tell you how to initial command line on a mac (though it does for linux and windows.  Thank you

Sorry, the Mac Launcher doesn't support add-ons at this time.  (and likely never will, it will probably be phased out in lieu of the 0.4 release having the Setup options changable in-game)   The README file should probably say as much, sorry for the confusion.

The "original PC" music is bundled with the OSX Installer, so you should always have some manner of music playing, if you let it.  Check the volume controls in the UQM Launcher to make sure they're not set to 0, and ensure that you've set the driver to MixSDL ("none" forces the sound off, and the OSX version has no OpenAL support)

To get a command-line, Open the Finder and open Applications:Utilities:Terminal  If you don't know how to use Unix shells, the command-line may seem unfriendly and nonsensical, but I like to think that you get used to it pretty quickly.  Smiley

To see a log of your last UQM game, type the command open -e /tmp/uqm.out  at the command-prompt.  This should open the logfile for the game in TextEdit, you may or may not see error messages regarding the audio driver in there.

Good luck,

sound levels are correct
no music error messages present

Could it be when I down loaded the music file my computer automatically unzipped them so I re-zipped them before putting them in the correct folder

Would that make a difference?

I'm skeptical of your assertion, as I doubt you know what to look for.  The top of the logfile should have some lines that say
Code:
argv[?] = [Some gobbledygook]
 What do yours say?

I can reproduce your situation (although not necessarily your problem) by moving all of the MOD music in the game aside; my logfile is then filled with messages like this:
Code:
Can't open 'comm/comandr/comandr.mod'
If you're seeing the same, it means that your content is busted, and you'll need to re-download it.

That you were able to get the game to load at all after doing this leads me to think "no", but turning off the "Open safe files after downloading" checkbox in your Safari Preferences is never a bad idea.  Which content files did you download from the website?

Ah, you're using high-quality audio!  And the old Launcher!  Both of those have known problems in the 0.3 release, please go here:

http://www.submedia.net/uqm/

Download the Launcher Update and the 0.32 update for the game -- follow the instructions in their respective readme files and let me know if the problem disappears.

I now have music, I am re- downloading voice files at the moment.
I deleted everything and started again.
Thank you so much with your help on this.

My step son is 18 he had his last year at school on Friday
It was a challenge getting to know him when he was young
We spent many hours playing star control together discussing tactics
We never did finish the game but that wasn't the point
He is over joyed to see the game again
More so than he ever was to recieve Metal Gear solid for his PS2
So am I the music bring back a lot of special memory for me.

You have to value your kids they dont stay that way for long

Thanks for your help Nick
