I've toasted a dozen of Zex's ships...and here comes number 13.  The Melnorme said I had a chance if I chose to fight him, but it looks like an infinate stream of ships.  Is it?

I know the other way around this puzzle, but alas, I want to do it this way...

You can't beat his ships (for every one you kill another one takes it's place). You have to do a task for him in order to get the Shofixti Madains.

Even though I don't think you can get much item-wise from attacking and destroying his ships, you can get a lot of dialogue from him if you continually destroy, escape, and come back.  It's worth it.

Violence isn't a solution (in this case)

When dealing with homeworlds, you cannot win the battles, as there is an infinite amount of ships that replace each one you destroy.

If Admiral Zex is indeed a exile, revilled by his own kind, then it would stand to reason he wouldn't have an <infinate> number of VUX crewmen to man his ships.  Hence the question.  But alas it seems the number is infinate (or at least 17)

Check the encounter screen.  If there are a lot of ships on the screen (like twenty or more), then it is considered a homeworld and there are an infinite amount of ships there.

They didn't exile him, he's a hero. They simply gave him his own planet so his sick fetish won't disturb the general population. That doesn't mean he isn't allowed to have a fleet of VUX ships to protect him. Remember he's the greatest general in all of VUX, so even if exiled (which he wasn't) he would have many supporters willing to go with him.

There is no encounter screen with him.  It dumps you straight to the dialog.

Yes, I just found that out today. Smiley

Encounters like that indicate that the person(s) you've bumped into are not initially hostile.

I accepted his quest, by the way, but I have no clue about his cryptic clue to the planet/star I need to go.  Any advice, specifically advice that tells me where to go? Smiley

Hint #1:  The Thraddash will tell you about it, as a warning, but you have to befriend them first.

Hint #2: It is not within any alien race's sphere of influence, and actually does look kind of like a little thingy swallowing a big thingy on the starmap

Hint #3:  One of the portals in QuasiSpace drops you off near where you need to go, which is how I originally stumbled upon it..

I hope that was "almost helpful"  Tongue

You'll know the creature when you see it too...tough, fast, and deadly.

And it CHASES YOU LIKE A MO-FO!   :-/

It took me about 9 landers to bag that thing on my first go.

Hint #4:  If a member of a certain cowardly race knows the location, and you threaten him, he may tell you to go there.

Well, injuries inflicted by your stunner are still counted when you send another lander to the surface. I usually clear out all the other life forms on the planet, then try to get it to intercept my path, and pelt it with the stunner. The shots actually knock the creature back a step, but unless you have improved firing installed, it'll eventually come in contact with your lander. Though what irritates me is that the atmosphere is at least marginally hostile, so you might take casualties before you facedown the beast (in which case contact could easily blow up the lander).

I usually recall the lander the moment it starts touching the lander, and send it down for another try. Usually on the second or third try you'll manage to grab it.
