sound delays
« on: July 05, 2004, 08:07:26 pm »

Hi everyone! I just stumbled upon UQM and got it up and running on a FC2 system. The only problem I'm having is that if I'm logged in as root and fire up the game, the sound works perfectly. However, if I fire up the game as a normal user, the sound effects are delayed by ~300ms. I can tell right away in the main menu when you hear the little beeps as you move from choice to choice. Anyone have any idea why this would be happening?

Are you using arts by any chance?
Try setting the environment variable "SDL_AUDIODRIVER" to "alsa", "audio", "dsound" or "dsp".

Sweet! Setting the environment variable worked... is this in the documentation somewhere?

Not in the uqm documentation. But it's not uqm-specific either.
I've seen delays with arts with various programs. Choosing a different sound output method usually solves it. For programs using SDL, the variable SDL_AUDIODRIVER does the trick.

Fedora Core 2 has a few sound issues. Especially when
using the KDE desktop (my desktop of choice). You
can find a number of suggestions for work arounds and
bug fixes at fedoraforum.org
