Earthling Point Defense
« on: September 30, 2004, 07:24:47 am »

I noticed a few times tonight that the Earthling's PDL sometimes
targets its own missles. I just fought a couple of battles with the
cruiser and watched three missles get nuked by my own point
defense. However, in my other six battles, this didn't happen, even
though I left the PDL on all the time.
Any ideas on why this happens (sometimes) and if it is a bug?

I think that if you shoot, rotate and then use pdl(or always using it) it will destroy the missle.

The crew is probably para-noid about a runaway missile. Hey, its what happened to the sub Tang in WWII. Or maybe that happened to a earthling cruiser too.....     Tongue

I thought the deal was that the PDL would target everything as soon as it was activated, but if a missile was launched while it was active it would recognize it. But interrupt the PDL for a moment and it'll be zapped

I always thought the pdl would hit anything (though I think sc2/uqm removed it's shooting at passing planets), including missiles, its just that most of the time after firing a missile your batteries don't have enough energy to fire a pdl.

I am rather accustomed to the pdl taking out my own missiles which is why I let go of the button for a moment when I fire.

It also saves your butt in case the missile comes around and targets you instead of your enemy (it's happened a couple of times).

Earthling vs. Earthling is an interesting battle though. Neither side can hit the other with their missiles so it's a PDL jousting contest essentially. Smiley

It's not, actually.. It's all about timing your missiles, so they hit the enemy when his batteries are drained...
Or firing two of them when your enemy has almost no batteries left.

That still sounds like fun...Why is the Earthling cruiser so weak compared to so many other ships? Even the Shofixti get the Glory Device..

It was ultimately meant to be a support ship for long range combat. If you listen to what Hayes says (hehe) he mentions that the Yehat and Shofixti were supported by the first wave of Earthling cruisers, which in essence conjures the image of Shofixti performing the role of fighter craft, Yehat terminators performing the role of destroyers and such, while the cruisers pound hierarchy forces from a safe distance.

Of course this advantage was countered when the Ur-Quan gained the Mycon as a thrall.

You may notice that the Earthling and the Mycon are fairly evenly matched, though the cruiser isnt as helpless in some situations.

Hmm.... I think that being able to make new crew is a better secondary weapon. For instance, lets say that a earthling and a mycon pound each other. Even if the earthling cruiser  is ahead in crew, all the mycon has to do is find the planet, gravity whip and make crew at its hearts content, since it can now outrun the missiles.

What would be a secondary that fits the cruiser?

Unless of course the cruiser re-orients itself to fire in the path of the Mycon...

The PDL also weakens the plasma balls, reducing overall damage.

Still, if the cruiser takes the plasmas head on at point blank, it's stuffed, just as it is with the VUX.

It's a battle of attrition. More often then not the cruiser can make it on top due to it's superior manouvarability, turn rate and acceleration. The mycon simply has firepower and regen on it's hand. It's a typical battle between finnesse and brute force and in this case the cruiser does come on top because it's assets are the mycons greatest weaknesses.

In other words, depends which ship finds the planet first.  :-/

Lol, nicely summarised.

Actually, wouldn't the Cruiser have an upper hand with its ability to destroy course-changing asteroids?

I tend to think that at a long range, the cruiser has the advantage.
However, the Mycon does regenerate crew at a rate nearly equal
to the damage a cruiser can do at long range. It tends to (in my
experience) make for long battles.
