We're trying again! Last week's tournament went kaput so we're doing it this coming Saturday. Jusry is still out whether it will be Swiss System or KO tournament.
Date: 28 July 2007 Time: Saturday from 4pm EDT Place: #uqm-arena at irc://chat.freenode.net
Be here for this sixth ever online Star Control Super-melee tournament!
Time where you live Sun 6 am Sydney Sun 8 am Otaki Sat 1 pm Los Angeles Sat 4 pm New York Sat 9 pm London Sat 10 pm Paris Sat 11 pm Helsinki
Tournament structure
Possibly: Employing the 'Swiss System' for the first time. The change won't affect the length of the tournament, but it will mean that if you lose the first round you still get another game or two - duking it out for minor placings. Seedings for first match-ups based on your NetPlay tournament record.
Or: Knock-out tournament
Provisional Schedule (all EST) 16.00 Check-in/Register 16.30 Kick-off
Following weekend can be employed if required (unlikely)
Game rules 1) Maximum 200 pts per fleet 2) Maximum one of each ship type per fleet (no duplicates) 3) Maximum 40 minutes per melee - Timed out games result in both players losing and exiting the tournament (an effort to nullify boring stalemates) 4) You must have your team set up before melee - this prevents you adjusting your line-up to counter your opponent’s team! 5) Thraddash ARE allowed 6) Organiser’s decision is final on all matters and can override rules 1 through 5.
It is not a rule, but you are highly encouraged to capture your melee with VidShot or similar application. This may help you in case of dispute. Otherwise you risk the tournament administrator making an arbitrary decision with the sole purpose of getting on with it.
Everyone in the universe should enter. The tournament will be structured in such a way to give newer players easier games early on.
I hope to see you there! See my signature for a quick link to #uqm-arena if you dont know where to go.

You should come along anyway, you never know – registration is often delayed. Either way you’ll get to play someone – competition or not.

And here I was hoping it'd be ZFP-only teams.

I've recently acquired a functioning Swiss Tournament program. Cedric, If you don't download and figure one of your own out by the time this tournament gets under way, I can run it for you. The newbies deserve to play more than one match, after all.

So be it! The Fot Face off will be a Swiss System tournament. I’m happy to have Shiver, Meep-Eep or whoever arrange the match ups while I compile results as they come in.
Always glad to spread ownership of these tournaments amongst the UQM folks.

Welp, that tournament has ground to a halt because half the players wandered off. I had some technical difficulties, but after they were resolved I thought everything was back in order.
<Shiver-> Shiver vs Tiberian <Shiver-> Cedric vs Mina <Shiver-> Bluhman vs Elvish Pillager <Shiver-> gaeamil sits out <Shiver-> gaeamil plays abad, Mizcu sits out. <Shiver-> Does anyone NOT know who they are playing?
That, newbies, was your cue to tell me you didn't know what was going on. Please use it next time instead of flailing about like a dying fish after I start my own game.

Shiver, any chance that you can point us to that free Swiss Tournament program that you are using? I would like to check it out for myself. Also, I'm hoping that it has some documentation as to how the system works (or at least their implementation of it), just for future reference. Thanks!

Okay!
As Shiver mentioned the Fot Face-off didn't quite work out due to a few technical issues with the Swiss System program, plus a few people leaving early.
I want to hold the Fot Face-off this coming Saturday.
Options going forward are:
1. Try again with the Swiss System Advantages: A nice clean start - give it another chance to work! Disadvantages: Delays league play further - which I'm not happy about, risk of people leaving early again, thereby leaving us without a July tournament.
2. Resume where we finished last week (i.e after 1.5 rounds) Advantage: Greater likelihood of completing the tournament (only 2.5 rounds to complete rather than 4). Disadvantage: Would require that the folks that left last week came back - couldn't really accommodate new people
3. Schedule a KO tournament instead Advantages: No obligation hang around after you have been eliminated - will free up time for some league participants to catch up on league games. No risk of weirdness. Disadvantage: We don't get to give the Swiss System a go this time round.
I personally favour either option 2 or 3. I'm not ready to give up on the Swiss Tournament System, but I really want to complete the Fot Face-Off. I am thinking about actually just making the decision on the Saturday - depending on who and how many show up.
Let me know your thoughts if you have them
