I've partially played this game four times. I want to like it, but I have great difficulty accepting games that take advantage of me. I want to finish the game, but I can find absolutely nothing of help. I bought everything Greenish sells, I got the device, and I've messed around the Sa-Matra for hours. I don't know if I have been in every system, but I have difficulty believing the secret to destroying the Sa-matra is a planet no one thought was worth mentioning. I am told "I need to make the device stronger."
How? No one knows. He might as well say "Go read a walkthrough, I'm done being of interest."
I think I've spent weeks doing pointless sub quests like the Syreens' and Illwraths'. In fact I took the game to the middle of 2160 this way, which was no help at all.

Some points based on what you've written, spoilered for the unwary. Also jay, if he thinks the Syreen subquest is unnecessary, what you told him isn't going to help at all. I suggest spoilering the race name there.
You mention two pointless subquests, which shows that you've got a couple of things wrong.
Syreen subquest: The Syreen lure the Mycon away from their own systems. Since you've managed to do this, I'm guessing you've found the Mycon homeworld. In that case, it's not a big stretch to assume that you've found a second world within the mycon sphere which is heavily guarded. When the Mycon fleet leaves, this place might be well worth checking out. It contains something you need.
Ilwrath subquest: The ilwrath subquest is needed to get the Ilwrayh away from where they are currently hanging out. Why? Well, if you check out on your old allies in the region you should get this. They also help you out with the Traddash, from whom you might need to "free" an important item. This item is one of several needed to rpeair something pretty cool.
If you're still totally lost, feel free to PM or post (with spoilers) here how much you've actually figured out. I'll be happy to drop some hints on you.
All in all, the game doesn't take advantage of you. But it doesn't hold your hand either. It's not enough to just trigger events, you need to understand why you trigger them as well.

The Chmmr say that that it's a nice bomb, also that I'll need a thing like that to destroy the Sa-matra. I've blown myself up a number of times trying to get them to make the device a weapon.
What am I supposed to know about this situation? Oh let me add I've talked to the pet until he repeats himself. He tells me what I already know and then doesn't explain what I am missing.

The Chmmr will modify the bomb when you are fully prepared to take on the Sa-Matra, but first you need to free the Chmmr.

I do say, this was one thing that kind of comes out of nowhere. Have you tried to find any shofixti? That search will yield relevant clues.
As far as I can tell, that's the ONLY clue to this. And if you bring the appropriate people right away, you'll never get a chance to read this text. It's not good.

Hmmm... I seem to recall the Chenjesu themselves mentioning something about it as well, so I don't think the Shofixti are your only lead.

Chmmr.txt does not contain any relevant mentions of 'sun' or 'mycon', except for one which indicates they don't know what the device, which triggers only if you bring it to them.
This is not promising.

Perhaps the Melnorme, then. I know somebody else mentions it, since I didn't even know about the Shofixti dialog until I read through the complete script years after I finished the game.

Not the Melnorme either, nor the Syreen. If the game requires you to pull information out of the Yehat, that's just cruel.

I'm sorry, am I missing something?
The Chenjesu/M:bots give you tons of clues as to why they can' help you, and why the process is so slow. we cannot be of any assistance now... we are in the middle of the process. i will explain after we chenjesu and mmrnmhrm were defeated by the ur-quan we chose to be encased within a single slave shield on this world as soon as the ur-quan departed, we began the process we initiated a synthesis of our two species, our two cultures one crystalline, the other purely mechanical this process, fueled only by the radiant energy of our sun will eventually produce a new hybrid race and when the process is complete, we will crack the ur-quan slave shield and emerge from our chrysalis like a winged insect unleashed from its cocoon then we will be ready and able to deal with the ur-quan, their battle thralls and their dreaded sa-matra. the complete synthetic hybridization of the chenjesu and the mmrnmhrm species will require approximately thirty five of your earth years this extended duration is necessary because our synthesis mechanisms are dependent exclusively on our sun's radiant energy. What if we could find some way to get you more energy? Would that speed things up? what you describe is theoretically possible but it would pose a great danger to us the process must be executed as planned... or it may fail catastrophically we could be destroyed. I take all those to be clues that you need to find something that produces energy to get help from those guys. Finding the actual device on the other hand take a bit more luck. It's one of those places in Mycon space I stumbled upon while looking for Egg Fragments. but as you mention, the shofixti will tell you about it if you meet up with him. the Yehat give you a clue as well AWK! BRAAK! Awk!... hiss... awk... (whimper)! We cannot be giving ye material aid, Captain, AWK!... ...but perhaps ye can make use of this information. Captain, when we were fighting the Great War against the YEEP!... Mycons, YEEP!... we encountered a number of odd worlds which seemed to be having their crust shattered. Molten lava ran across the surface in huge rivers, and dense metallic elements were abundant. But the strangest world we found was the first planet at the star at coordinates 639.5 : 231.2. The Mycons were guarding this planet with an almost limitless number of their Podships as though there were something of great value there. We could never break through their forces, though we destroyed scores of their ships. Perhaps, if ye fare better than we, or can somehow trick the Mycons to let ye land you may discover this secret, and it may help ye in yer quest. So that's two races giving you clues to a position in an area where most people will be searching for Egg Cases anyhow. And the target race telling you that they are dependent on the Sun.

Beat me to it, ah well.
Really, the biggest hitch in this whole sequence is the Mycon homeworld, but that's pretty well documented here, at least.

Yes, that is how it happened to us. I do not believe that is enough. It is reasonable to suppose that people will find it. It is clear how they might not, while following all reasonable/remaining possible leads.
