what do you think of new sci fi films??
« on: February 09, 2003, 12:36:32 am »

Hey guys,
How is it going? Sorry I've not been on these forms in ages.

Have you noticed or is it just me but I haven't really seen a good new sci fi movie in ages.. In fact anything really good sci fi wise..

too be honest it think a star control movie would be ace, I think the last half descent sci fi film I seen was event horizon, and the last half descent sci fi series I say was B5 crusade, and Space above and beyond...

Imagine if they made a 'Star Control' series! Personally I think it would be good provided id doesn't end up like voyager or enterprise... or even worse Andromeda... I think if they got the writers from space above and beyond to do it, it would be ace..

Okay finally what did you guys think of the star trek nemesis film?? I thought it was horrid Shocked

thanks for reading

Nemesis was... okay, at best. I enjoyed the two new Star Wars movies, but that's probably because I'm a total Star Wars nerd already (plus they're not TOTAL crap... you just need to learn to block out Jar Jar Binks in TPM and block out the really freakin' long Anakin and Padme scenes in AOTC..). But yeah, you're right, there hasn't really been a good new sci-fi flick in a while. The last really good one would be the Matrix, but I get the feeling you're thinking of of spaceship related sci-fi.

Firefly was the last really good sci-fi show that was on TV.  I watch Enterprise, but it kind of bores me.  It doesn't have much "style".

Sci-Fi Channel is doing "Tremors: The TV Series", but they didn't pick up Firefly after FOX cancelled it?!  That is a crime IMHO Angry  Apparently, intelligent sci-fi is not "in".

Crap like Joe Millionaire is.  *sigh*  Tongue

Firefly was great, but the Nielson families want their westerns to be westerns and their Sci-Fi to be Sci-Fi.  Never the twain shall meet.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but I posit that any movie that requires you to "block out" ANY scene for ANY reason in order to convince yourself that you enjoyed it is total crap.

You paid your money to be entertained, and the onus is on the filmmakers to do the job -- the only "work" that should be required from you is the occasional suspension of disbelief; for instance, when you see a spaceship or an alien or other such doesn't-really-exist foible onscreen.  Anything else -- such as ignoring plot holes, wooden acting, inane dialog or tacked-on scenes -- is a disservice to yourself, and to movies in general, because NONE OF THAT SHOULD EVER HAPPEN IN A MOVIE.  Not only should you focus on the bad parts, you should complain loudly about them, since the only way for filmmakers to stop producing crap is for people to stop putting up with it.

For the record:  I used to be downright fanatical about Star Wars, but Episode I completely cured me.  I didn't even waste my time seeing Episode II, but I did see the Yoda fight scene at a home theater demo; if that was the best scene in the movie, that movie must have sucked hard.  Fortunately, Peter Jackson stepped up where George Lucas could not, and the Lord of the Rings series has (so far) revitalized my faith in moviemaking as entertainment.

The fact is, not everybody is going to like every movie.  If you think that any movie that has a part in it that you would have to overlook is total crap, you're depriving yourself of a great deal of enjoyment.

I loved the LOTR movies.  There are some places where I think Peter Jackson handled the books poorly.  But you know what?  I blocked that out, and the movies were great.

Besides, the other Star Wars movies had the same problems.  Return of the Jedi was fine as long as you ignored the Ewoks.  New Hope and Empire were fine as long as you ignored the plot inconsistencies that went between Episodes IV and V--when Lucas was still unsure whether he was going to make a trilogy or just one movie.  And all three were great as long as you could ignore Luke's hairstyle.  ^_^

I tend to agree with Cyamarin.  The way I look at it, any movie (or TV series for that matter) gets a number of "free plot holes" directly proportional to how good the rest of the movie/show is.  Any movie/show that uses less than its standard number of plot holes is even cooler.

I mean, come on Nic!  Apply your own standard to UQM!

In my mind, the fact that blowing up the Sa-Matra won the war and stopped the Kohr-Ah is a gigantic plot hole!  BUT!  The rest of the game is so cool that I can easily overlook that and still enjoy the game.

So if you actually applied your standard, you wouldn't be on these forums!

[steps off soap box]
For the record, Episode II did suck.  Only part I found worth watching (and even then only when separate from the rest of the movie) is Obi-Wan trying to catch Jango.

I didn't really think of Episode II as a movie.  I thought of it more as a "string of really cool sequences that you always wanted to see held together by the thinnest of threads".

Well, yeah.  I mean, I watch porn too.  I don't watch it when I'm looking for great cinema, I watch it when I feel like looking at people having sex.  It's just in your expectations.

Any way are any of u guys gonna see the new "red Dwarf" film when it comes out at the start of next year  Roll Eyes

also what do u think of enterprise?? i think it could be good if they got good writers and directors behind it  Angry

That's not a plot hole ... The Chmmr told you that the Alliance was winning the war, and only after the Ur-Quan brought out the Sa-Matra were they defeated.  So thus after you take care of that little problem, presumably the Chmmr could then go in with their newly kick-ass ships and decimate the remaining Ur-Quan forces.

Plot hole that was not .. deus ex machina on the other hand ....
