a community actually still EXISTS for this game!
(FYI I am 16 years old as of right now)
Ok, first let me tell how i've found this as either it is interesting or i like tlaking about myself...
about 5 years ago, as a random thrift store, i bought this old game i saw, used condition...
in the plastic bag was a manual, a disk, a thin white cardboard sheet with install instructions on it and... well that's it...
When on the way home (I am always bored on family thrift store days where we spend the whole day just driving from store to store looking for anything interesting...) I read the manual, sounds like my kind of game, and i'm DYING to play it!
I get home and install it, try to run it, and... it doesn't like XP... Disappointed i put Star Control 3 Away at the bottom of my huge pile of discs...
well a year and a halfish ago i started looking for some way i could run the game, because by then i had learned emulators exist etc... (because i had started experimenting with linux) and started looking fora dos emulator, found it! dosbox.
I got it working and played the game, i LOVED it; i probably have spent upward of 300 hours on that game. (and i know because my monitor gives a "backlight hours" statistic lol..." but, first time through it gets boring, why? because i cant figure out what to do next... Phail, I had somehow missed getting the Dakdaklacpak translator.. So, I retry the game, and this time i do everything that the ICOM says, and spam hunam colonies as they are the only non-flake ones... (evil mycon, freaky syreen, spineless spathi, ur-quan to kzerza colonies, vux traitors, utwig ultron breakers, phunk "I got ran over by a precursor computer"ers... ET-CETERA... anyway, i beat the game, it was buggy, but i beat it! Then i spent most of my time in melee mode, although i did try doing a plane-by-planet scan for anything interesting... meh i could upgrade my ships? phehh..
Well, about a week ago (this last monday actually) i decided to play it again, but OH NOES i lost the disc... so i started looking for a downlaod of star control 3, since i always look for downloads of stuff i've lost the discs to... ANYWAY I find it but it has the media ripped out of it for some retarded reason... but in my search i found star control 1/2 and decided to try them thinking "Well, it probably wont be as good as the 3rd one, but let's see..."
Yea, #3 sucks by comparison!
Earlier today i was going through my firefox tabs and this site (not the one i got the DL from :p )took a quick look and though... "Heh, forums, i bet they are dead, but i'll take a look anyway..."
So, here i am, amazed at the following this game has!
- WARNING - I am always an extremely HYPER newbie at every community i join for a while and manage to annoy everyone, so just FYI... - WARNING -
So, from what i understand three was talk of a modern star control game being made by the original makers, but it hasn't been done and is looking less and less likely... But, copyright owners are even all these years adamantly fighting community projects regarding this game?! (seems dumb to me as this can't possibly cost them money directly or indirectly...)
What made SC3 fun for me was the colony management, building my fleet, nad interacting with alien races in ythat fassion... What makes SC2 fun is The same interactions, the interesting planets, customizing my ship, and the whole idea of the game... (I Haven't beaten the game yet so dont spoil it! lol )
It got me thinking (as all new games i love do) things that could be done to make it better... (THus why i mod other games like star wars: empire at war, etc...) - PS - MY SHift KEy STicks - PS _ Star control 2 could easily compete with the games on the market with a total graphics makeover. Hands Down! (All successful old games could, ha ha, they made themselves good thorugh good gameplay, NOT good graphics. New games like SPORE on teh other hand...)
So, did i get anything wrong in the above, did my grammar suck, and hai.
oh, and does anyone mind If i try 3D-modeling some of the star control 2 Ships for fun.. well actually nobody will mind, what i mean is some opinions on it. (If not, OMG YOU'll BREAK THEIR GOOD LOOKS!)

Hello and welcome to the awesome world of Star Control 2 ! You'll read it in the forums, but there is a online mellee option in UQM, if you liked the HyperMellee, you'll like it here even more.
There are also at least two more communities for SC universe that I am aware of - Frungylovers community at LiveJournal and another forum called SCDB, short for Star Control Dicussion Board.

Well, you know what they say - practice makes perfect. Or hilarious waste of time, either one.

Well see you in a few days, once i make the 3d model of the earth cruiser. (and want opinions ("YOU SCREWED THIS UP!") on it)
You see, I Am always looking for something new to model...
Gahh and something always gets me stuck, what should the point defense lasers look like * Kerr heads out to look for current laser defense tech... PS after 3 hours of a full fleet of human cruisers VS a half fleet of avengers, the avengers win every time with their superior firepower, defense, and speed... They flame the nukes, and outrun the cruiser...
EDIT:
Well, I'm not particularly satisfied with it... :/ idk if ill post a pic...

The community here is friendly and houses plenty modellers. If there is criticism to be dealt out, it will be constructive. In addition, as I mentioned before, there is another dedicated board with 3D models posted (where is Lukipela? hasn't posteed the link yet, I'm getting worried) that you might get creative ideas. http://star-control.com/fan/resources.php under section 3D models.

Welcome to the community, Kerr. Always nice to see new faces around.
Luki is currently on vacation, but I'm sure he'll pop in before too long.
That's a pretty decent untextured model, though that does make the detail rather difficult to see. The only thing is that the nacelles on either side of the ship should be angled down instead of up. For visual reference:

Midsummer rules. It sucks to be back at work for 3 more weeks. Thanks for spamming PNF links guys, it saves me the trouble
Kerr, a few helpful suggestions for you. It's totally and absolutely okay to be hyper and excited about discovering a new place like this. You're super-welcome. But here are a few tips to enhance your forum experience:
Please consider that not all of us speak English as their first language. It's often the second, third or fourth. That means that we really appreciate it if people take the time to spell properly, capitalize and use grammar. Otherwise it's hard for us to follow the conversations and we're liable to simply skip over most of what you write. I guess you could phrase it as a form of respect. If you want people to respect you enough to read and reply to all your posts, make sure to respect them enough to make them legible.
Also, it's great that you are posting pictures and spoiler the really big ones. But most people aren't going to start scrolling around your 5000 by 5000 picture, it's simply too big to get a grip on. Consider using something like tinypic to upload pictures in a more manageable format.
Other than that, welcome aboard. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask or PM us. We're here to help.

And it is beneficial too for learning the language better - for example, this "requirement" has cured my bad habit of placing extra space before punctuation marks.
